Was the love triangle between the Baronness and Duke canon? I think I'd recall something like that if it was, but it seems very unlikely as in all the images I remember of her she was always with Cobra.

The nod at canon was VERY brief. They pretty much threw all the canon out the window and just used the characters daces and such.

I was displeased by a lot of that really, but I LOVED Cobra Commander. I knew it was Joseph Gordon-Levitt and love him as an actor, he was one of the spot-on perfect redeeming parts in the movie.

Hey there, Stephanie. Great question!

I've listened to "What Matters More" a couple times, and I see the point he's trying to make. I don't think this time it's so much a matter of saying the word in context as it is making a point. He's saying that the church cares more about whether or not someone says a curse word than whether or not people have clean water, or how they treat others. It sounds like he's trying to draw attention to the problem, and using language that will get people's attention. Interesting. So what matters more? That's the question of the hour, isn't it.

You have a lot clearer memories of the original than I do. I just remember watching it, but not a lot of the characters or storylines. I'm not really offended by dark themes or anything like that, I think kids need to have an understanding of those things, but it just seems ridiculous to have so so many crude jokes and references in a movie that I KNOW a lot of kids will be seeing. Really, I was in Wal-Mart right before I saw the movie and I saw all kinds of action figures and toys from the new movie. If they're not going to leave out a lot of the junk, why are they marketing the movie to little kids? Irresponsible, if you ask me.

This also comes from me as a youth worker, who feels responsible to shield her kids from bad influences. Pardon me if I come down a little harder than most. :)

Why, thank you, Greg! By the way, is the HP Progs store still up and running? I remembered hearing about it in an older podcast and would love to get a "Hogsmeade is for lovers" T-shirt. ;)

Coming from one who is not easily shocked, I still have to agree about some of the humor in it...while I laughed through the entire movie, I couldn't help but think about the sheer amount of kids that won't be able to (or shouldn't be allowed to) see the movie. After all, even though Marvel comics essentially created a slightly more adult storyline to follow with their original comic series (I'm thinking way back here) all of this is STILL based on a toyline that originated in Japan by Takara.

I'm all for more mature reinterpretations of our childhood favorites; after all, the 23-30 age bracket is really the target audience for 80s throw-back films. Bryan Singer did an excellent job with the first two Xmen movies IMHO. However, they should still attempt to curb a bit of the sexual humor...adult themes, dark themes, sure...completely persistent non-relevant frat humor, not so much.

Transformers is by and large my favorite franchise ever so I'm a bit hard on the movies. The plot was awful. Yet again, the Decepticons plotted to end the world and Sam stopped it just in the nick of time. With "the original primes" storyline used up and the Matrix of Leadership (or at least Bay's blasphemic incarnation of) idea used there's only one usable plot device left to pay homage to the original series - Unicron...good luck with that.

I did like the depiction of Bumblebee and Prime as being totally hardened by this point though, as both were uncharacteristically bloodthirsty in battle - something that hasn't really been seen before.

Hey there Mary J!

Thanks for reading my blog (and still keeping up with the dead "Harry and the Potter" LJ Community :D). I've honestly not formed much of an opinion on Deathly Hallows. Quite frankly, I've only read it once (in a 13 hour mad rush after I bought it at midnight the day it came out), and was so overwhelmed by it that I've not picked it up to reread. Upon my reading of it though, I thought there was a lot of beautiful Christian imagery. Upon closer analysis, I might think differently, but I was not looking for a straight allegory either. Narnia is a beautiful allegory, but it's not symbolic in the way Harry Potter is, just like Harry Potter is by no means a direct allegory. I'm not really putting preference on either one at all, I just think they are very different in their approaches. If a person is looking for a direct allegory, I'd recommend Narnia, but if Christian undertones is what the person is looking for, Harry Potter would be the series I'd recommend. As for characters, I was disappointed with Dumbledore, but even in the end, we can see that he knows he messed up. The book is just very complicated and I'll be doing a reread soon, so I'll be able to offer you a better opinion then. I'd be glad if you kept up with my blog, as I've enjoyed reading and interacting with your thoughts on this. I'd be interested in hearing your opinions on anything else I might review here! :D

Thanks!
